the summer like temperatures have been baking. if you got used to it, things are about to change. gwen tolbert is down in the weather center with change. >> talk about one extreme to the other. let's look at what the highs were yesterday because we broke records at a couple of locations. 93 degrees at national airport. 93 at dulles. and that was a record that was broken. and baltimore 91 degrees. well we're a far cry from that as we move through into the course of today. already starting out very much on the cooler side. we currently have 67 degrees at national airport. only 59 degrees at gaithersburg. and we've got 59 at fredericksberg as well. and 68 degrees at annapolis. our live doppler radar showing you we have a little bit of wet weather moving in across the region. and that is something we're going to keep an eye on during the course of the day. a few light sprinkles right now. we'll see that change during the course of the evening hours. and back to the maps. for today, we're talking over cast highs. high of 71 degrees. almost 20 degrees cooler than yesterday and that's the kin

school. about age 13 to 18. >> reporter: gwen says self-injury is a growing trend mostly among girls. some have a history of abuse or depression others none at all. >> it could be anybody. these kids are just normal kids. >> reporter: they go to great lengths to hide their behavior making it difficult for parents to discover. >> to look for would be a child that insists on wearing long sleeves or jeans all the time even in warm weather who is very self-conscious and won't even push up their sleeves. some girls go so far as to cut their bellies or the bottoms of their feet in order to avoid detection. >> it's like an addiction once you get into it but the urge never completely goes away. >> reporter: they are proof that even extreme cases can be overcome. now they want to help others. >> as for specifics statistics on how many teens cut themselves there's for very studies that have been done. a study in 2005 surveyed 293 teens of those 195 reported cutting. they hope to create a group so those that are o flicked by this can learn they are not alone. >>> here is what's in the news now.

. first lady michelle obama continues her campaign to phytoobesity. we have gwen looking at health headlines as we talk about this and the whole let's move campaign that we hear so much about in washington. but how is this done across the country, dina? >> reporter: well, steve, we have a real disconnect when it comes to fighting childhood obesity and we're hoping this white house message will trickle down to playgrounds and schools across the country. the question is will that actually happen? mrs. obama is i is aing kids -- is saying kids need to move but adults do too. and part of the problem with the obesity is there is a disconnect -- a hip rock asy in terms of what we are saying and doing. yesterday was my son's birthday and couldn't send in cupcakes because of the school wellness policy. but we have specialty shops popping up all over the country as we eat giant cupcakes filled with calories. and we have adults fighting an obesity epidemic and not doing right when it comes to exercise and eating right. how do we get this to sink into adults and to kids. and we're eating 31%
